Thirty years on the tools. It shows the moment he's standing in your yard.
Most clients don't choose Green Ladder because of a resume. They choose us because of what happens at the design consultation: straight answers, real technical depth, and no sales pitch.
It started at age 10.
David didn't get into construction to start a business. He got into it because he was ten years old, working a summer job for his uncle. From the first time he was handed hammers, mud knives, drills, and the rest of the tools, a passion for building and for solving problems on site was born young. What followed was decades of hands-on work in framing, roofing, siding, landscaping, concrete, and everything in between. Not as a student. As someone who showed up and did the work.
More than 30 years later, and five years into a custom building business that keeps growing, that same passion is meeting a real gap in the market. Custom outdoor living spaces through the summer, custom quality interior renovations through the winter. Same standard on both.
That experience is what you actually notice when he's standing in your backyard. He can explain exactly why a footing needs to sit below frost line, why one composite brand holds up better than another through an Alberta winter, and where a cheaper build ends up costing more five years down the road. Ask him a hard question at the design consultation and you get a straight answer, not a pitch.
Clients trust Green Ladder for that reason, not because of anything on a page. It's the way he walks your yard before picking up a tape measure, the questions he asks about how you'll actually use the space, and the fact that he's still the one in front of you at the consultation. Not handed off to a salesperson or a crew you'll never meet.
"Most contractors show up with a tape measure. We show up with a design. Ask me why we made any decision in it, and I'll give you a straight answer every time."
David Hutten, Owner
The deliberate move.
Moving to Central Alberta wasn't a coincidence. David and his family compared four cities directly against the kind of business and life they wanted to build, and Red Deer won on the fundamentals. When David looked closely at the outdoor living market here at the premium level, he saw a real gap: the design thinking wasn't consistent, the material standards varied wildly between builders, and the client experience wasn't built around the homeowner.
That gap was the opening. Green Ladder was built to fill it: design-led outdoor builds, premium materials engineered for Alberta winters, and a standard David holds on every single project, regardless of size.
Why this matters for your project
You get a builder who will stand in your yard and tell you exactly why a decision is being made, not just what it costs. No hand-off to a salesperson. No jargon you're expected to just accept. Ask a hard question at the design consultation and he'll tell you what he actually thinks, not what's easiest to say.

You always know where things stand
No silence. No surprises. Clear communication at every stage from design through final walkthrough.
We build something you are proud of
We hold the same standard on every build regardless of scope. The only standard worth working to is one we would show our neighbours.
This is where we live. That changes how we build.
We are not a company that travels to Central Alberta. We live here. Our kids go to school here. The people we build for are our neighbours. That means every project carries our name in a community where we will run into the homeowner at the grocery store for the next twenty years.
We also build for this climate because we live in it. Every material we specify, every footing we engineer, every drainage solution we design is built for Alberta winters. Not around them.
