Drainage is everything on a slope to water

Water is the enemy of a retaining wall, and a lot running downhill toward a lake moves a lot of it. We build on a compacted gravel base, set the block with the right backward lean into the slope, and put drainage gravel and pipe behind the wall so water is carried away instead of building up behind it. In Central Alberta that trapped water freezes over winter, expands, and shoves the wall out of line. On a slope shedding water toward the lake, getting the drainage right is the difference between a wall that holds for decades and one that bulges in a few years.

Wind and exposure on lakefront lots

Lakefront lots are exposed and windy, and while wind does not load a retaining wall the way it loads a fence or a deck, the exposure matters for what you build on top of and around the wall. If you are pairing the wall with a patio, seating, or a railing at the top of a drop, we plan for the wind so the finished space is actually comfortable to use, not just structurally sound.

Engineering, permits, and doing it once

Past a certain height a retaining wall needs an engineered design and often geogrid, which is reinforcing mesh tied back into the soil, and a permit may be required. Where a permit is needed the homeowner is the applicant in Alberta, so we prepare the drawings and package for you to submit and coordinate the inspections. The soil around the lake varies, so we assess the actual ground before finalizing the design.

Price comes down to length, height, the block system, and the engineering and drainage the job needs.
