Water is the enemy. Water that sits in the base freezes, expands, and lifts the surface unevenly. Good drainage and a well compacted base give that water somewhere to go and something stable to sit on, so the freeze-thaw cycle has nothing to push against.

Freeze-thaw and how a patio moves

Central Alberta runs through dozens of freeze-thaw swings across a winter and spring. Every time the ground freezes it expands, and every time it thaws it settles. A patio built on a thin or poorly compacted base rides that movement and comes apart: pavers tip, joints open, and the surface goes wavy.

The way you fight it is depth and compaction. A base built deep enough and packed hard enough spreads the load and moves as one piece instead of heaving in patches. That is the difference between a patio that looks the same in ten years and one you are relaying after three.

Footings for anything that stands on the patio

If your Olds patio includes anything structural, a pergola post, a permanent bench, a fire feature, an outdoor kitchen counter, those elements need proper footings, not just a paver to sit on.
