Hillside Walkway with Landscape Tie Steps
Innisfail, AB · 2026
A front lawn in Innisfail that sloped all the way up to the door with no path through it, cut into a single run of 4x6 landscape tie steps with crushed bluestone treads, from the sidewalk right up to the home's existing front steps.
This home in Innisfail sits up on a rise above the sidewalk, and the front lawn slopes the whole way up to the door with no path through it - getting to the front entry meant walking up the grass (which is fine in the summer, and a lot less fine on a wet day or once the snow comes). The homeowner wanted a proper walkway from the street up to the front door.
We excavated and graded the hill first, and then cut it into a series of level steps running straight from the sidewalk up to meet the home's existing front steps at the door. Every step sits on a 6" base of compacted crushed rock, and each one is framed with single 4x6 pressure treated landscape ties, staked and secured into the ground at every step so they hold their place through the freeze-thaw. The treads are filled with crushed bluestone, and the steps are 36" wide the whole way up.
The steps run as one continuous climb with no landings, so every step is the same 16" to 17" deep from the bottom to the top and the climb stays even. The bluestone also drains well, so the treads are not holding water.
