Deck Building in Red Deer: Our Process from Design to Finish

A deck project in Red Deer starts the same way every time: a site visit, a design that accounts for how you'll actually use the space, and a plan for materials that will hold up through an Alberta winter. Here's what that process looks like end to end.

Design and Site Visit

We start on site, not on paper. That means looking at grade, drainage, sun exposure, sightlines to neighbours, and how the deck connects to the house before any layout gets drawn. Material Selection

Pressure-treated wood, cedar, composite (Eva-Last, TimberTech, TruNorth), and PVC each perform differently through Red Deer's freeze-thaw cycle. PT wood costs the least upfront but needs regular staining and eventual board replacement. Composite and PVC cost more initially but don't absorb water, so there's no seasonal maintenance. Cedar sits in between: less maintenance than PT, more natural character, and it needs refinishing every few years to hold its colour. We build all four systems to the same structural standard. The difference is long-term upkeep, not build quality.

Permits

Decks 2 feet or more above grade require a permit in Red Deer. The homeowner is the permit applicant, not the contractor. We prepare the drawings and documentation and support the process from submission through inspection, but we don't submit on your behalf.

Construction

Footings go to full frost depth, approximately 4 feet in the Red Deer area, on every project regardless of deck size. Framing gets built to span composite or PVC decking without excess bounce, since both materials behave differently under load than PT lumber. We keep job sites clean and give you a realistic schedule up front, then hold to it.

Finishing Details

A hot tub-ready deck needs different framing and access than a standard deck, so we plan for that upfront if it's part of the build.
