Two-Tone Composite Deck & Mitred Stair

The deck at this Springbrook acreage lot was solid underneath and finished on top. The piles were sound, so the railing, deck boards and staircase came off and went out for recycling, and the work went into the frame that stayed. A few joists and the rim joists were replaced in brown treated lumber, every existing joist was wrapped in joist guard, and blocking went in wherever the picture frame and the railing posts needed something solid to land on.

SmartSide skirting closes in the base, glued and screwed to the fascia framing with brad nails into the skirt frame. Over that runs 12 inch composite fascia, countersunk with colour matched screws. Composite fascia moves as much as half an inch between a January morning and a July afternoon here, so the joints sit behind pieces relieved on the back into a T shape that lets the boards travel without opening a visible gap, and the mitres on the exposed corners are adhered. A picture framed starter edge with a nosing shadow covers the top edge of the fascia the whole way around.

The surface is two-tone Eva-Last Infinity bamboo composite: Light Cream field boards run on the Camo hidden fastener system, with an Oasis Palm centre divider that matches the picture frame. The frame and divider are countersunk and plugged with colour matched material, so there is no screw head anywhere on the walking surface. The stair is where the extra hours go. Stringers were cut on site from 2x12 treated, wrapped, blocked solid and set at 12 inches on centre, then the picture frame was mitred at the 90 degree corner so it carries around and down each tread. Every riser is covered and every step is nosed.

Roughly 50 feet of Regal Ideas aluminum picket railing, white, with a top and bottom rail and capped ends, cut and fitted on site to the deck as built. A door in the skirting gives access to the space underneath for storage. The composite carries a 25 year manufacturer warranty and asks for nothing beyond a wash.
