TimberTech vs Trex: Which Composite Decking is Better for Alberta?

If you've started researching composite decking, you've seen Trex everywhere. It's the most marketed composite deck brand in North America by a wide margin. TimberTech is less visible in the consumer market but more commonly specified by professional builders who've worked with both. Here's an honest comparison for Alberta.

The brand background

Trex invented the composite decking category. They've been making it since 1996 and their name recognition is unmatched. TimberTech is owned by Azek and sits at the premium end of the market. Both are legitimate, established companies with real warranties.

Where they differ

Core construction

Trex's mid-range and premium lines use a capped composite (wood fibre + polymer with a cap). Their entry-level Trex Select and Trex Enhance lines are uncapped on some edges, which affects moisture performance. TimberTech's premium lines (Pro Reserve, Pro Legacy) use a full PVC cap on all four sides, which is the highest standard for moisture protection and freeze-thaw performance.

For Alberta, where moisture and temperature cycles are significant, the full four-side cap matters. It's not that Trex's capped lines don't perform, they do. It's that TimberTech's cap technology is more complete at equivalent price points.

Fade and stain warranty

Trex offers a 25-year fade and stain warranty on their capped lines. TimberTech offers 30-50 years depending on the product line. In practical terms, both products will perform well over that period, but the warranty length reflects the manufacturer's confidence in the product under real-world conditions.

Surface texture and appearance

This is subjective, but worth noting: TimberTech's wood grain embossing tends to run deeper and more consistently than Trex at equivalent price points, which results in a more convincing wood appearance. Trex's appearance at the high end is excellent, but their mid-range lines have a flatter, more manufactured look.

Price

Trex and TimberTech are competitive in the same general price range. TimberTech's premium lines (what we spec) are priced similarly to Trex's Transcend line. You're not paying a significant premium for TimberTech, the spec difference is in what you get at that price point.

Where Trex is still a strong choice

Trex Transcend is a legitimately excellent product. We've installed it and it performs well in Alberta conditions. If a client has a strong preference for Trex, maybe they've seen it on a neighbour's deck and love how it looks, that's a reasonable choice. We'll build with it.

Trex is also more widely available from big box retailers, which matters if you're doing a partial DIY project. For professionally installed decks, availability is a non-issue, we source both.

Our honest recommendation

For most decks in Red Deer and Central Alberta, we specify TimberTech Pro Reserve or Eva-Last over Trex. The four-side capping, the longer warranty, and the appearance quality at our specified price point are the reasons. Not because Trex is bad, it isn't, but because we build decks to the standard we'd want on our own homes.
