Covered Composite Deck with Pond View

Blackfalds, AB · 2024

A weathered covered porch backing onto water in Blackfalds, stripped back and renewed in Eva-Last Infinity bamboo composite with new soffit, composite post cladding and brown aluminum railing.

This one was a renewal rather than a rebuild. The covered porch at the back of the house looks out over water, and the bones were sound, but the deck surface was weathered, the soffit overhead had discoloured, and the post cladding had gone the same way. The footprint never changed, which is why no permit was needed.

We stripped it back first. Railings came off, the old decking was lifted and trailered away for recycling, the worn rim joists were pulled for replacement, and the damaged soffit and post cladding came down. With everything exposed we inspected the structure properly, then wrapped the joists in joist guard and added structural screws to the existing ledger so the frame underneath would outlast the composite going over it.

Replacement joists went back in with engineered tie-ins, hurricane clips and Simpson Strong-Tie hangers, and the new soffit was installed overhead on fresh tracks and fasteners.

The surface is Eva-Last Infinity bamboo composite. We picture framed the exterior with a nosing overhang so the edge reads as a finished line, then covered the rim joists in fascia and riser board, seamed and sealed and colour matched, so the entire wood substructure disappears. Every cut end is covered. The few screws that fall outside the hidden fastener field around the edges are countersunk and plugged with colour matched plugs, fitted tight and guaranteed for the life of the deck.

Last, the posts were clad in composite matched to the deck fascia and boards, brought all the way down to the deck surface so the covered structure looks finished top to bottom. Brown aluminum railing was cut and built on site, with mid-rail posts and spindles at code-compliant spacing.
