Utility locate before any digging
We call Alberta One-Call to locate buried utilities before a single post hole is dug. Skipping this step is both dangerous and illegal, and we do it on every project as a matter of course.
Post holes augered round, not dug square
Every hole is augered to a clean circle. An augered hole leaves the surrounding soil undisturbed and lets the concrete bear evenly on all sides of the post. A hand-dug square hole is almost always oversized, which takes more concrete and puts less of it against solid ground.
Posts set below frost line
The most common fence failure in Alberta is posts that were not deep enough. Every post goes into concrete 4 to 5 feet below grade, below the frost line. This is the single most important factor in fence longevity.
