Covering Your Hot Tub: Pergola, Gazebo, or Open Deck?

A hot tub in an Alberta backyard is most enjoyable when the outdoor season extends beyond the narrow July-August window. The right cover structure makes the difference between a hot tub you use three months a year and one you use nine months a year. Here's how to think about the options.

The case for covering your hot tub

Alberta's outdoor season has a compressed comfortable window, roughly May through September for uncovered outdoor spaces. A covered hot tub area with wind screening extends that window significantly. Steam and warmth inside an enclosed or semi-enclosed structure in March or October is a completely different experience from sitting on an open deck in the same conditions.

Beyond season extension, a covered hot tub also provides UV protection in peak summer, privacy from neighbours and upper-storey sightlines, and a defined sense of place that makes the area feel like a room rather than just an equipment pad.

Option 1: Open pergola

A pergola over a hot tub surround, open-rafter cedar or composite structure, no solid roof, is the most affordable covered option. It defines the space visually, provides support for string lights and privacy screens, and creates a sense of enclosure without a full roof.

The limitation is weather: an open pergola doesn't provide rain coverage and offers limited wind protection. In shoulder seasons, an open pergola is better than nothing but not significantly warmer than a completely open deck.

Open cedar pergola over a hot tub surround: $15,000 to $28,000 depending on size and complexity. This is often the first phase for clients who plan to add a louvre roof or screens later.

Option 2: Louvre roof pergola

A motorized louvre roof pergola is our most recommended cover structure for hot tub installations. The louvres open fully for full sun and star-gazing. They close completely for rain protection and wind reduction. The combination of the structure and adjustable louvres is what actually makes the space usable all four seasons, not just the three warm ones.

Aluminum louvre roof systems also integrate side screens, retractable fabric panels or fixed louvred screens on the wind-exposed sides, that eliminate the wind chill issue that limits open pergola usability in shoulder seasons. With louvres closed and screens deployed, a covered hot tub area in a louvre pergola is usable well into October and from early April in Central Alberta.

Aluminum louvre pergola over a hot tub surround: $35,000 to $60,000 depending on size, screen options, and lighting integration. The cost premium over an open pergola is significant, but so is the usability difference.

Option 3: Gazebo structure

A purpose-built gazebo, fixed roof, four or more walls with screen or glass panels, is the most enclosed option and the most expensive. A properly built gazebo over a hot tub is essentially a three-season room in the backyard. It requires snow load engineering for the roof structure (mandatory in Alberta), proper footing depth, and coordinated electrical for ventilation and lighting.

For clients who want maximum enclosure and year-round usability, a gazebo delivers what a pergola can't. The trade-off is cost ($45,000 to $90,000+ for a quality gazebo structure) and the fixed nature of the design, a gazebo changes the character of the outdoor space more significantly than a pergola.

Option 4: Open deck surround (no cover)

Not every hot tub installation needs a cover structure. Some clients prefer the open sky experience, stars on a clear Alberta night are exceptional from a hot tub, and accept the seasonal limitation in exchange for the unobstructed view.

An open surround is also the right choice for clients who are building in phases: engineer and build the deck surround now with the structural capacity for a future pergola, then add the cover when budget allows. This requires planning the footing locations and post positions in advance so the future pergola lands correctly.

Design considerations specific to Alberta

Snow load is the most important structural consideration for any covered hot tub structure. Alberta's ground snow load varies by location, Red Deer and Central Alberta have significant snow load requirements that determine beam sizing, post sizing, and connection design. Every covered structure we build has this calculated specifically for the installation location, not approximated.

Steam management matters in enclosed structures. A fully enclosed gazebo over a hot tub needs ventilation, either passive through operable panels or active through a vent fan, to prevent condensation from deteriorating the structure over time.

Privacy from upper-storey neighbours is a common concern. The cover structure height and the addition of privacy screens on the exposed sides should be planned together, not as separate decisions.

Getting it right from the start

The best covered hot tub installations are designed as complete systems: the deck surround, the cover structure, the electrical, the lighting, and the privacy screening all planned together. Adding these elements piecemeal over time works but costs more and rarely achieves the integration of a design that started with the complete picture.
