Best Composite Decking for Alberta Winters

Alberta is one of the harshest test environments for any outdoor building material. Temperature swings of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius between summer and winter. Freeze-thaw cycles that happen multiple times through spring. UV exposure from high-altitude sun across long summer days. Not every composite decking product is built for this.

Here's what we've learned building decks in Red Deer and across Central Alberta, and what we actually specify.

What to look for in composite decking for Alberta

Capped vs. uncapped composite

Uncapped composite decking, wood fibre mixed with plastic, no protective shell, absorbs moisture, fades faster, and is more vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage. It was the first generation of composite and most of the horror stories you've heard about composite decking peeling, fading, and staining come from uncapped products.

Capped composite has a polymer shell on all four sides that prevents moisture absorption. This is the minimum standard for Alberta. We don't install uncapped composite. The performance gap is too large to justify the cost savings.

Solid core vs. hollow core

Most composite decking is hollow-profile (lighter weight, faster to install). Solid core products are denser, more rigid underfoot, and better at resisting the expansion and contraction from Alberta temperature swings. The difference is noticeable when you walk on it. Solid core costs more but delivers a quieter, more substantial feel.

Fade and stain warranty length

Every composite manufacturer offers a warranty. The meaningful question is what it covers and for how long. A 25-year fade and stain warranty is the minimum we spec. The best products carry 30 to 50 years on fade, stain, and structural integrity.

The products we specify and why

TimberTech (Azek)

TimberTech's Pro Reserve and Legacy collections are our most-specified composite lines. 50-year fade and stain warranty. Solid PVC cap on all four sides. Proprietary EasyClean coating that resists grease and staining. The performance in Alberta conditions after 5-plus years of local installs is excellent, no fading, no movement beyond normal expansion, no surface degradation.

TimberTech is our first recommendation for most residential composite builds in Red Deer. It's not the cheapest composite on the market. It is the one we'd put on our own homes.

Eva-Last

Eva-Last uses a stranded bamboo core with a full polymer wrap. The bamboo core is harder than most hardwoods, 3,000+ on the Janka scale, and the polymer cap handles moisture and UV without issue. Eva-Last is also manufactured using solar power and the bamboo crop regenerates in 3-5 years, which matters to clients who care about material sourcing.

We specify Eva-Last for clients who want premium hardness underfoot and a more naturalistic wood grain appearance. It's competitively priced against the top TimberTech lines.

TruNorth

TruNorth is a Canadian-made composite decking manufactured specifically for Canadian climate conditions. The product is made with 95% recycled material and carries a 25-year residential warranty. We specify TruNorth for clients where Canadian manufacturing origin matters or where the budget calls for a strong mid-range composite rather than a premium line.

Azek (PVC)

Azek is full PVC, no wood fibre content at all. It's the most moisture-resistant product available and the right spec for situations with sustained moisture exposure: hot tub surrounds, coastal-facing applications, or decks that drain slowly. Azek is also the cleanest-looking surface, the uniform PVC composition holds colour and finish without any organic material variation. It costs more than composite and some clients prefer the look of composite's wood grain.

What we don't specify and why

We don't install first-generation uncapped composite or any product without at least a 25-year fade and stain warranty. We also avoid brands that have had documented performance issues in cold climates, there are a few in the market that perform well in temperate conditions and fail in Alberta winters. If a product isn't on our approved list, we'll tell you.

The bottom line

For most residential decks in Red Deer and Central Alberta, TimberTech Pro Reserve or Eva-Last are the right choice. If moisture exposure is the primary concern, Azek. If budget calls for a solid mid-range Canadian-made product, TruNorth.

The brand matters, but installation matters just as much. The best composite decking installed wrong, wrong fastener spacing, wrong footing depth, wrong gap for expansion, will still cause problems. The product and the builder are both part of the equation.
